Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
