The US-based firm Waymo has revealed that its autonomous vehicles will be available for hire on London's roads starting next year.

UK Capital Named as First European City for Self-Driving Ride-Hailing.

The UK capital will become the first European city to introduce an driverless taxi service, akin to those currently familiar in multiple US cities and four other American locations utilizing Waymo's advanced technology.

Initial Trials to Begin with Trained Operators.

Waymo stated that its cars are now traveling to London and will commence operating on the capital's public roads in the next few weeks with safety drivers behind the wheel.

Waymo – originally established as a offshoot from Google's autonomous vehicle initiative and belonging to the same parent group – indicated it would increase services and collaborate with the government transport body and the city's mobility organization to acquire the necessary permissions to provide fully autonomous trips by 2026.

Increasing Involvement in Autonomous Mobility In London.

Additional firms, such as Uber and the British technology firm Wayve, have also declared their own plans to pilot autonomous taxis in the capital next year.

This is in response to the British government stating it would speed up rules enabling public testing to proceed before legislation supporting driverless transport becomes law in full.

“It is exciting that Waymo aims to introduce their technology to London next year, under our planned trial program,” said the transport secretary, the secretary.

“Supporting the AV market will increase available mobility choices in addition to bringing employment, capital, and opportunities to the UK. Innovative investment like this will assist in achieving our mission to be international frontrunners in emerging tech and lead countrywide development.”

Full Launch Anticipated After Automated Vehicles Act Takes Effect.

A fuller rollout of self-driving taxis is anticipated in the UK after the related legislation fully takes effect in 2027.

The Company's Current Presence in the United Kingdom and Beyond.

Waymo currently has connections to Britain after establishing its pioneering European technical center in Oxford in 2019.

The company is also introducing services in Tokyo using JLR eco-friendly cars, marking its sole additional current project beyond the United States.

“Our experience shows how to responsibly scale totally self-driving taxi services, and we are eager to bring the benefits of our systems to the UK,” remarked Tekedra Mawakana, explaining that the system was “enhancing transport security and mobility more available”.

Proven Experience in the United States.

Waymo introduced its driverless taxis in 2020 and currently reports it has served more than ten million riders in the US.

In spite of some concerning occurrences, Waymo stated that data showed that vehicles operated by humans were involved in crashes that hurt pedestrians at a much higher rate than its self-driving fleet.
