The speculation around The Game Awards was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team is likely crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in diverse methods, frequently in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can anticipate more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
