Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using such drugs need to be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
