Her Royal Highness's Annual Yuletide Service of Carols Spotlights Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly Yuletide celebration at Westminster Abbey, with guests including royals, celebrities and local heroes who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The sizable congregation will enjoy a selection of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

Focusing on Love and Generosity

The central message of the event, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on the afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

Among the guests will be a couple named the Cordiners, whose daughter died of a brain cancer, and who set up a charity, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a terminally ill child.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often quietly and unspoken, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the circumstances of individuals," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the festive gathering.

A Steady Comeback

The princess has been making her own steady comeback to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, recently giving her initial major address in two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Performance and Potential

Attendees entering the Abbey will enjoy performances from young musicians backed by the Future Talent organisation, established in part by the Duchess of Kent to widen access to musical tuition.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been helped by the trust, with funding assisting with musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "incredible" to be playing at the concert.

"Music can be very expensive," she stated. She is now studying at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to develop their musical skills.

A Sisterly Duo

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who plays the euphonium, will likewise attend the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Attending the service will be representatives of different generations.

That will include Saphia Turner, aged nine, honouree of a prize for youthful altruism, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to raise money for local food charities.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been adorned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Taking to the stage will be recording artist Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a nautical singing ensemble, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the perfect culmination."

This annual carol service will be aired by a major network on Christmas Eve.
