This past Friday, Pam Bondi designated Jay Clayton to lead an investigation into opponents of the President and their links with Jeffrey Epstein. This decision came hours after the president directed her to launch the probe.
In a statement, the Attorney General commended Clayton as “one of the most capable and trusted prosecutors in the country”. The official remarked, “The department will handle this matter promptly and thoroughly to provide clarity for citizens.”
This action contrasts with a July memo from justice department officials which declared that the Epstein files did not warrant additional investigations. As per the memo, investigators “did not uncover evidence that could predicate an investigation against uncharged third parties”
The announcement comes as growing pressure from Trump on lawmakers to block the full release of files concerning Epstein before an key congressional decision in the coming days. Many Republicans are expected to back the disclosure.
Recently released emails from Epstein have brought attention to Trump’s previous connections with the sex trafficker, revealing information that he was more aware of Epstein’s actions than earlier acknowledged.
On Friday, Trump declared he would ask the DOJ to examine connections between Epstein and Democratic figures, specifically naming prominent individuals such as Clinton, Summers, and Hoffman. Interestingly, Trump also referred to the “Epstein hoax” as a “scam”.
Additional developments included appeals to safeguard public lands, criticism of an monitoring group, and a judge’s decision for a settlement in the Purdue Pharma lawsuit.
